Walking East: Brick Lane

Part 1 of the Walking East series, where photographer Yeshen Venema wanders down his favourite London streets with a camera.

This lane derives it's name from the brick and tile manufactures who were found here way back in the 15th century. Since then the area has been colonised by Huguenots, Irish, Jewish, Bangladeshis, and most recently, Hipsters.

Here's a visual tour, the first of a series where I wander down my favourite roads in London with a camera.

Most think Brick Lane starts South of Bethnal Green Road, but it actually begins a bit further north where you can find a row of indy shops like Tatty Devine and the corner workshop of Unto This Last who do cool things with MDF.

What's that musty smell? That's right, it's the highest concentration of vintage shops in the universe. The trend that won't die - there's even a shop on Columbia Road called 'Future Vintage'.

Painting on roller shutters is more difficult that a flat wall, but that doesn't stop artists like Eine getting up all over East London with his letters. This on is at the top (North) end of Brick Lane, corner of Padbury Ct.

This guy has a proper junk yard place off Brick Lane on Bacon Street. Any Luton Van parked round this part of town will get tagged!

One of the few proper 'odds 'n' ends' shops left. It's also covered in stickers, stencils, graffiti and poster art.
